On Monday this week, we had an excellent presentation from Blake Attwell and Kathryn Bennett of Desjardins. Blake took us through their product line-up and Kathryn presented many compelling reasons on why everyone should have insurance based investment products in their own portfolio. We learned about the subtle differences of insolvency vs. bankruptcy, which RRSPs are creditor protected and which are not, the importance of family class beneficiaries and the estate administration process. These can be very complicated topics and I think the best way to handle questions on these subjects is to provide your client with a starter list of questions that they can take to their accountants and lawyers. We don’t want to give advice on such complicated matters that could lead us into trouble. As Kathryn pointed out, every question has an answer that begins with: “It depends...” The presentations are linked below for your reference. If you have any questions, please let me know.
